Jim Thorpe rides
 

Looking for a guide at Jim Thorpe. Not the stuff you find in the books
from Blue Mountain Sports. Rode a few years back on Nesquehoning
Mountain (looking for an area like that). There use to be someone who
posted as jtguide who said he did tours of the good trails.

The "good" trails are currently on state game lands and are closed to
mountain biking. Psycho Betty's revenge is probably about the best open
trail now. Tamaqua (sp?) is now coming up as the "place" to ride.

The trails you are probably thinking about are American Standard and the
Deer Paths. I don't formulate an opinion on poaching, but the current
"work around" is to buy a fishing license and carry a collapsable pole
in your 'bak. When stopped, say you're on your way to the fishing hole.

When are you going there? Our club has a ride scheduled in JT for
memorial day weekend. You're welcome to join us and we have a few
expert guides who lead those rides.

I went out to your site and I am impressed. We were talking about
doing Copper Caynon this spring but it fell apart, now it's too hot.

We were in Fruita the exact sametime you were! We spent over a week
there with a day trip to Moab to ride Slick Rock for a couple of guys
who did not go with us the year before. With the exception of
Porcupine Rim, Fruita is better hands down. Did you get out to the
BookCliffs? What about Moore Fun? Nice Climb..

The Allamuchy ride appeared to be the Deer Park side. The North Side
of 80 where the 24 hours race sould be on your list if you are ever
back up that way. I would rate it the one of the bester rides in New
Jersey. Totally different than Deer Park. You do need to know your way
around though.

Where in Tamaqua are the trails? Nesquehoning is off 209 heading
toward Tamaqua and is not on State Gamelands. It is about 7 or 8 miles
out of JT, is that inthe general area?

The fall is also a good time, but supposedly more moist.

I did the Muchy 24 last year and have already signed up for this year.
We are the group with the projection video system in our campsite. The
Muchy (non race) ride I did was on the North side and I did get lost.
Luckily, we ran into the guys who make the trail for 24 and they showed
us the way out. I'm planning a Muchy 24 training ride for my team next
month. I am determined to finish in the top 12. Yeh, not a high goal
but coming from second-to-last, it's a big leap.

It's in the state park, not the game lands. I think the area you are
talking about is where Deer Path I and II branch off from. Isn't that
just a fire road? I think Tamaqua SP is still another 6 or 7 miles from
there (http://tinyurl.com/73tw9). Since the town of JT is becoming
increasingly bitter towards MTBers, Tamaqua has begun to step up to the
plate. They may even host the JT MTB Weekend next year since it has
been canned from JT. There are not a lot of services around there,
though. The crappy thing is that all of this could have been prevented
if the MTBers had spent a little money in the town. Now the town has
been overrun by trendy cafes and boutique shops. Do you think the
people in those places want a bunch of dirt covered MTBers parading
around? Ok, no more rant.

Anyway, the invitation is there for Memorial Weekend. I can't tell you
exactly where we will ride, but I think you would find it to be very
*good* ;).

If you were lost in Allamuchy the person you ran into was Bob W. and we
might have already ran into each other. Been racing the past two years
on a four-man team. We ended up in third place the first year but,
succumbed to injuries and mechanicals last year and finished eighth (I
think). We are thinking that each of us would do solo and race each
other this year. After last year's weather it can't get any worse. So,
make it worse.

The trail in Nesquehoning I am referring to is 98%, very sweet
singletrack. The 2% is a very nasty climb up to a water tank on a fist
sized, loose rock, fire road at a 12 percent grade for about 1/4 mile.
I just do not know how to put it all together it has been too long
since I was last out there.

I'll check out the Tamaqua SP later this week. Have you ridden Fell
Mountain? Raced there a couple of years ago in the Mid Atlantic series
and have gone back there a couple of times.

Keep me posted for the Memorial Day ride.

I love Deer Path, it has such a great flow to it. Although I have yet to see
any deer on it...

Well, maybe people can talk him into doing it at Tamaqua. Praise
someone long enough and they will succomb. I will not be able to go
this year, but if you get up there drop him hints that Tamaqua sure
would be a purdy place to hold a festival! ;)

Either way, it's no reason not to organize your own gathering there.
There are still private campgrounds that don't charge much and allow
alchohol. We could even arrange an AMB-JT. I know some were interested
in having an MTBR gathering there as well.

Interesting. Carla and I were going to do the last JT MTB festival but
figured we would bag out... Just couldn't deal with another year of
camping in the rain! but we were thinking of doing a late summer early
fall trip out that way...
