disc brakes on front, v-brakes on rear

I don't want to add lugs for rear disc brakes to my frame, so I would
only consider using discs on the front.

I imagine it should be fine, as most of the braking power comes from
the front anyway. The rear brake does not need as much modulation or
power as the front.

Any comments?

Paul

Sheldon Brown would agree with you.
Personally I like the rear disc brake when going down steep decents though.

It works perfectly for me on two of my bikes. I can stop both wheels if
i want to. A rear disc is totally useless in my opinion because about
80% of the braking power is neede in front. With adequate caution of
course ;-)

Greetings, Urs

I've had a Shimano hydraulic disc on the front of my Rockhopper, with the
original V-brake on the rear, for about a year now, and I love it.
The only downside I can find of having the V-brake on the rear is it needs
adjusting and tweaking now and again, whereas I haven't had to touch the
front brake apart from a set of pads.
As far as braking ability and rideability goes, the combination is fine for
me.

I've just done it. I installed it on my old frame and it worked great when
I rode it around my block. I say old frame because a day after I installed
them I picked up a new frame at the local end of year bike show. I should
have a real test ride this weekend so I can't say how they really work. I
made sure the new frame had V-brake mounts on it so that I could keep my
rear tire setup.

Your reasoning is right though so just got for it. I'm sure you realize you
need a new front wheel and hub, and maybe fork. Make sure you have a decent
front brake lever if you are keeping it and going mechanical. I went the
Avid Mechanical route, with Avid speed dial 5 lever. If I were on mtbr I'd
tell you how great they are but I've had no real rides with them yet.

Get one of these if you want to add disk brakes to your rear.

$50! That costs as much as the brake system!

I did it for a while. It was safe, but I found that because of the
difference in breaking and feel between the different types of brakes, I
wasn't happy with my ability to balance the breaking between the front
and back. I wasn't as sure on downhills or at speed.

Lots cheaper than a new frame though.

I've heard it said that it's difficult to take your rear wheel off with
these thingys on. Do you know anything about that? The picture sure looks
good and I can't figure out why. I was advised against doing that on my old
frame for that very reason.
