On June 7, 2016, a motorist driving along North Westnedge Avenue in Kalamazoo struck a group of bicyclists. Five of the cyclists died from the collision and another four were injured.

While this tragedy falls into the extreme side of these incidents, looking at year-over-year statewide data of traffic crashes involving bicyclists, a troubling trend is revealed: while total crashes involving bikes have fallen over the past 10 years, 2015 marked the highest number of bike-related traffic deaths in more than a decade.

Analyzing data on traffic crashes involving bicyclists illustrates many common conditions behind these accidents, and some interesting changes in trends for the record-setting 2015.

With a drop in accidents from 15-18% on weekdays, to 10% on weekends,
I suspect that the results are not statistically significant due to
the wide variations and the low number of accidents involved. All
this says is that more people ride bicycles on weekdays than weekends.

This article is all about cars, not bicycles, but many of the factoids
mentioned probably apply equally to cars, bicycles, pedestrians,
livestock, and fixed objects. When a driver is out of control, what
they hit is largely a matter of who gets in their way. For example:

The NHTSA reports that most accidents occur during "rush hour,"
between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. And according to the NHTSA, Saturday
is the most dangerous day of the week to drive, primarily because
there are more cars and more drunk drivers on the road than
any other day. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety,
31% of fatal drunk-driving accidents occur on the weekend, and
the highest number of drunk drivers is on the road between
midnight and 3 a.m. Fatal crashes are also four times higher
at night than during the day.

Beware of vacation drivers perhaps?
IIHS also discovered that seven of the 25 deadliest days in the
U.S. occurred during August, which made it the deadliest month
on the road. September and July rank as the second and third
deadliest months, according to the NHTSA, and March had the
fewest auto fatalities.

So, if you're planning a cross country ride, do it in March.

I wonder if there's an app for estimating the risk of riding at any
particular time or day? Something like the weather report, except it
deals with the probabiliy of getting involved in an accident, which
should be predictable with about the same accuracy as the weather.

I hate to sound like Krygowski throwing one of his "Danger! Danger!" tantrums, but the total number of fatal accidents on any day in a nation of huge geographic spread is just too low to conclude that by staying home you stand a significantly better chance of staying alive.

Even at a lower level, merely wishing not be involved in any accident, not just a fatal accident, I'm not at all certain that statistically the conditions are conducive to a hard and fast conclusion. On the other hand, you have to draw a line somewhere, and to approach my town house from either side, one has to pass a bar, so on Saturdays nights I don't ride between about six and eight in the evening (when the binge drinkers are on their way home to dinner) and usually not until after midnight (when by law the pubs close). As I say, probably a precaution too far, but I throw it into the pot in the certain knowledge it will elevate Franki-boy's blood pressure simply for discovering that I'm human.

PS I know you were joking, Jeff. but the statistically challenged clowns on RBT share another characteristic in common: they're totally humorless.
