Once a railway, soon to be a bike trail

Updated: Thursday, March 6 2014, 06:03 PM EST GREEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio
(Josh Knight) -- The trains and tracks are long gone and in their
place will soon be space for biking and hiking. The first phase for a
new bike trail is moving forward as trustees in Green Township get
closer to closing a deal to buy some property. The area has changed a
lot over the last 30 years. Back then there was a giant railroad
trestle at one intersection and now all that is about to change. It
will be another way to get around, but this time, it will require some
exercise and maybe a nice pair of tennis shoes. The busy intersection
of Glenway and Race in Greenship Township is now the proud owner of a
stretch of land that will one day be a biking and fitness trail. You
don't see much now, mostly just grassy fields, but that isn't quieting
buzz about the project. The trail will run along the same path as the
former C&O Railroad. It starts between Oakdale Elementry School and
Bridgetown Middleschool. The path will eventually run all the way to
Veterans Park. Right now, Green Township only owns the land for phase
one. But this bike path isn't all about another place to exercise, it
will also serve as economic development. While the township doesn't
own the land yet, phase two already has the hospitals excited. Of
course, this won't happen overnight, but it is something many people
are looking forward to. Follow Josh Knight on Twitter @joshknightwx

Bike trails are fine as recreational trails for pedestrians, dog walkers and small children learning to ride their bikes.

They are NOT "bike paths" as they are usually named. Bicycles are a clear and present danger to pedestrians and especially so with those in areas of older people who use these paths as a means of exercise. Often they have poor sight and are hard of hearing. What's more, these are ideal areas for older people and small children to exercise. Bicycles are a danger to them.

So let's be sure to recognize these as recreational trails and not "bike paths" so that there aren't any squabbles about cyclists scaring the bejabers out of other trail users.

Around here (Ottawa, Ont.) they are "multi-use paths," as many are used by
commuters. I use them both to commute and for recreation, and the
unconsciousness of the people on foot is a constant problem.

"When I were a lad" some 50 years ago, Ontario had suburbs springing up all
over the show that had no sidewalks. There were regular public service
announcements to the effect of "where there are no sidewalks, walk on the
left facing traffic." I intend to write to our city council's transit
commission to suggest that they apply the same logic to the multi-use paths
and that they mount a similar campaign, even if it is no more sophisticated
than signage where pedestrians enter the paths.

Typical, bicycle riders do all the lobbying to get these off the ground
and then get all the whingers jumping on board wanting it for the, selves.

Because there's no way to ride at a normal rate of speed on these rails-to-trails sport riders do not like them and generally avoid them unless they are a short cut to somewhere.

However they DO have lots of beginners and children riding on them and walkers screaming at them while at the same time not paying the slightest attention to whatever else may be on that trail.

While they're fine for what they are you find that car drivers complaining that bicycles are on "their" streets when they have their own "bicycle path".
