Flat Bar Road Bikes with Low Step-Over, i.e Mixte

Looking for a new bike for the spousal unit. She had a "townie" bike but
she crashed it and I don't want to put any money into it.

She wants a low step-over frame. I want her to have a lighter bike than
her last one. Unfortunately, road bikes with low step-over are pretty
rare these days.

Suggestions are welcome.

I went to six bike shops today, and looked online, and this is what I
found so far

Mixte
-----
Soma Buena Vista. One bike shop in Shallow Alto had four or five of them
built up with low-end Shimano components. $1000. Mixte bicycles are very
popular in Shallow Alto, but I was surprised to see so many Soma bikes
build up. This was at Cardinal Bike Shop next to Stanford. For $1000
they should have at least Tiagra level, if not 105.

Rivendell Cheviot. Frame is $1300.

Sort of Mixte
-------------
(all of these appear to use the same frame)
Nashbar: "Nashbar Flat Bar Women's Road Bike"
http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product...51_-1___204687.
Very low end components. $289
Bikesdirect: Dawes Wendy. $300. Very low-end components.
Bikesdirect: Motobecane Cafe Latte: $400. Low-end components (Sora)

Drop Bar Mixte that Could be Converted to Flat Bars for about $75-100
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Motobecane Mirage Sport. From bikesdirect.com. $350. Low-end components
(Sora/2200)

So only one LBS had anything, and it was way too expensive for what it
was. $1000 is about the top end of what I would spend, but not for the
junk they put on that Soma Buena Vista.

What was interesting that I was in Shallow Alto for lunch and there were
Mixte road bikes of one sort or another everywhere. Saw a beautiful Trek
Mixte road bike but unfortunately it was locked really well. A lot of
shops did have Mixte frame bikes, but they other than the Soma, none had
front derailleurs, intended soley for flat riding or very low hills.
There are a great many Mixte bicycles for sale on craigslist but they
are all older, 27" wheeled models with no triple cranksets. We ride some
very steep hills, and especially at our ages we need that triple crankset.

I'm pretty much resigned to having to order something online, either the
Motobecane Cafe Latte or the Motobecane Mirage Sport then changing the
bars/brakes/shifters.

Somebody saw you coming, Scharfie, and said to themselves, "Here's an engineer we'll rip plenty."

I send you a link to a collection of ladies' Gazelle bikes, in English just for convenience. One of my bicycles is a Gazelle, a superior bike, see http://coolmainpress.com/BICYCLINGgazelletoulouse.html

You will be able to do much better than these prices on German Ebay, and at Dutch discount box shifters (the trick with the latter is to find one who'll ship to you).

GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE AND WORK YOUR WAY UP.
http://www.royaldutchgazelle.co.uk/collection-bikes

There's a dozen bikes that will suit at less than $1000 landed in California. In steel I like the 7sp hub gearbox Van Stael, which is a trapeze format, though it is likely that some of the 'wave' formats at the same price may be more comfortable even though they're in aluminium. The Orange is a prize-winning low maintenance bike, very fully equipped for the price, a perennial best seller. It's near the bottom of the page.

American bicycles must all be gold-plated!

My wife went looking for one of these and decided to go used rather than
new. She ended up with a very nice 70s Raleigh Sport which appeared
practically unused; I think she paid $50 or something like that. Needed
a new rear rim as the wheel was bent (my guess is someone bumped into it
with a car in the garage, but no other damage). Upright bars but not a
straight bar as appropriate for the era.

A fine product; I own and love one of them.

That said, new product abounds in a huge range, from a very
low step-through Raleigh Detour 2.5 $329 or striking colors
on the Bianchi Torino $479 (both frequently changed to
lighter faster 28mm tires) through Soma Buena Vista up to
custom:

Yep, that's a 62cm open frame for riding in skirts.

Or Record Pista fixed:

Custom is always indulgent of taste and we've just spanned
two magnitudes of price.

I haven't ridden one but there are step through models that look ok.

Nope just a bog-standard Raleigh Sports. Exceptional only in
its lack of exceptional features. Nice bike, rides well.

I bought it primarily for the steel mudguards (44 years ago)
but after changing to tubular rims I discovered it's a lot
better handling than I expected.

Don't feel bad about it, Duane. I made the same mistake. Mind you, on the list I sent Scharfie, I actually selected the one steel road bike with a low stepover (van Stael, near the bottom of the page) for special mention.
