Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona pedestrian, police say

Officials said an Arizona woman was killed after being struck by a
self-driving Uber vehicle early Monday -- an incident believed to be the
first of its kind.

The accident in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe caused the company to
suspend all testing of self-driving vehicles in cities across the country.

Tempe Police Sgt. Ronald Elcock told FOX10 Phoenix the woman was walking
outside of a crosswalk when she was struck by the vehicle.

It seems to have hit a push bike as well on its way to killing the pedestrian, but the report states that the two events were not related. RIP, etc.

This is what happens when companies try to push technology thats not ready
simply to boost their share price. But then only idiots believed the BS about
it being what drivers want anyway.

Typical cyclist, walks her bicycle in front of a car and people say it
was the car's fault.

Yet when a pedestrian walks in to the road in front of a cyclist you tell us it is the cyclist's fault.

No system designed by humans will be 100% reliable.
The obvious first step is to reduce speed limits for motor vehicles in urban areas to 5mph.

The cyclist transponder idea could be made to work with smart vehicles as well as conventional drivers.

The smart vehicle is on a narrow windy road and as soon as it gets the RF signal from a nearby cyclist around the turn, the car slows down and starts looking.

Pedestrians could wear the transponder as well, no different than a bike light except for the longer wavelength.

An engineer at the FCC suggested an AM radio frequency band, no licensing required, a few dollars/copy. The button battery would only need to be replaced once every few years.

I've been trying to get Sacramento on board, specifically mentioning California's "historical" highways which are much like many roads in the UK:

Scenic but one mistake and you are history.

There might even be some way to make it work as a true radio beacon, precisely locating cyclists and pedestrians when they are in "line of sight."

Are you saying that pedestrians in the carriageway are fair game outside of a designated crossing?
