another racing cyclist dies.

The cyclists had been heading in the direction of Abergavenny and the van
had been travelling in the opposite direction.

Mr Carroll was taken to Nevill Hall hospital but later died from his

"Old Raglan Road (A40) between the Steelhorse Cafe and the Hardwick
Roundabout at 8.50pm on Tuesday".

The A40 trunk road is a dual carriageway between those points. The named
roundabout is the more westerly point, being the junction of the
London-Fishguard Trunk Road with the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road,
which is also a dual-carriageway at that point. The café is about seven
miles to the SE, along the A40 towards England.

How can anyone be on the wrong side of a dual-carriageway?

Rules of the road don't apply to racing cyclists?

apparently not:
An eyewitness described how cyclists had been racing with up to six
side-by-side as they headed towards the finish line.

Another man described how bikes were "flying through the air" and riders
falling off their bikes as they broke to avoid the vehicle.

The Abergavenny Handicap is a 45-mile race open to any competitor with a
race licence and around 70 people were taking part in the circuit down the
A40 between the town and Raglan and Abergavenny.

Rachel James, sister of Olympic hero Becky James was at the finish line. She
said: "I didn't see the actual crash, but it is awfully sad, terrible. We
are all devastated, but I hope the event can continue."

An eyewitness expressed his disbelief that the road remained open as the
race took place, with riders racing with up to six side-by-side down the
A40. He said: "I'm not sure if anyone was to blame, but the road should have
been closed."

That still isn't clear about what happened, but it seems rather unlikely
that the van driver was on the wrong carriageway.

The report of a head-on crash suggests strongly that the bicycles
(allegedly up to six abreast) were the ones on the wrong carriageway.

Perhaps it'll become clearer.

Or the race should never have been allowed on a public road.

This complete story is probably a fabrication:
"Dan took avoiding action, but went over his handle bars after breaking.
