Where to find old MTB parts?
 

I have an old Peugeot Orient Express, a mountain bike I purchased in the
mid-80's. It has Shimano Exage SIS components. "Light Action"

I need to replace my thumb shifters and brake levers. They are cracked and
broken.

Where would I find such parts for an old bike?

On line or otherwise... Any ideas, or links, please send suggestions.

I would also check www.bikeman.com - who has a lot of older parts.

The brake levers should be easy - even to replace with new parts - but
the thumb shifters might be tricky. New components aren't compatible
with the old 6 and 7 speed stuff. (You could replace the entire
drivetrain, but that would cost more than the bike is worth).

You might check with a few bike shops in your area that have been in
business since the 80's. Most shops have a box in back that all the
"old but works" stuff gets stored.... if you remove one of the shifters
and say "got any of these" you might get lucky. (Half the time they
won't charge you for anything from the box).

_ Maybe not. An MTB that old has cantilever brakes, not V-brakes
it needs a different lever than the now more common V brake
lever. Harris has them.

_ 7spd thumbshifters are very hard to come by. If you don't need
indexing you can use Paul's Thumbies and a set of bar end
shifters in friction mode. However, those two parts are roughly
a third of the way to the price of a recent used MTB. MTB's
have improved greatly in many respects since the
80's. Personally, I really like fixing up and tweaking old
bikes, but when you start adding things up, you realize that
you aren't saving much if any money.
