anyone out there own one of these marvels of technology? just bought one
myself and i am loving how much more enjoyable it is making my commute to
work. i feel like a kid again.

And everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

However I disagree. I see lots of adults around Worcester riding electric
bikes and scooters and I'm prepared to bet that almost every one of them
would otherwise be in a car. Anything that puts more people out there on
bicycles (electric or pedal) is a good thing for all cyclists. Anything
which keeps a car off the road is also a good thing for all cyclists (and
pedestrians)

More power to them (and I mean that quite literally, 250 watts is not
enough to convince most motorists to ditch their cars and buy one. Many cars
have more powerful lights than that)

it's closer to that than anything else so i guess it is. while the bikes
are close to the the orginal mopeds. the way they are used is a cycle.

if it helps folks over hills or to not arrive at work as a sweaty mess
good.

They used to be called Motor Assisted Pedal Cycles.
Then that got shortened to just "moped".

Good luck if you've got a moped that slips under the rules
governing motor vehicles. But it's not the same as cycling.

Something can be both a good thing for cyclists and not cycling. I bet
most of the people on the local Park and Ride buses would be in cars
in town if the Park and Ride wasn't there, but that doesn't make a bus
a cycle.

Most of the people I see on electric bikes are not pedaling at all,
using it as an ultra-lightweight (and very slow) motorbike, not as
an assisted cycle..

On the other hand, I have an electric bike kit myself, and I don't expect
to cycle any less, but I do expect to use my car less. Once I actually
finish fitting it....

Many subjects here are equally on topic to a human powered bike and an low
powered lightweight motorbike wich is legally treated the same - does a
helmet make you safer, should they be confined to dedicated cycle lanes,
what's the best way to carry a suit to change into at work without creasing
it, which panniers are waterproof, etc. etc.

But discussion of the relative merits of different battery technologies
or whether wye-delta switching is a useful substitute for multiple gears
is likely to be tolerated at best.

I don't disagree that something that keeps a car off the road is a good
thing, and I'm quite happy that people use them to get out and about.
It still isn't cycling though - cycling means using your legs to move
yourself along. Virtually every one of these electric mopeds I've seen
has the rider just sitting there zooming along. That in itself I have
no problem with, but really there is no difference between that and
riding a petrol moped, in principle if not in law.

Mind you, I did see one poor girl attempting to pedal one of these
things up a slight incline. The Q-factor was horrendous, and from
behind she looked like she was trying to pedal a horse!
