A man has been charged in connection with the death of a "lovely man who was loved by everyone" following a fatal road crash in Derbyshire last year.

David Bates died after he was involved in a collision with a Volvo lorry on the A515 between Clifton and Ashbourne while riding a bicycle.

The accident happened on September 10 last year.

Police shut the A515 between Darley Moor and Ashbourne at around 3.30pm. It reopened at around 7pm.

The 71-year-old from Clifton was described by his family as "young at heart" and a "lovely man".

But an inquest into Mr Bates' death was formally adjourned due to criminal proceedings in connection to the incident.

Assistant coroner Emma Serrano told Derby and Derbyshire Coroners' Court: "The police have investigated and published a file with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the CPS have decided that criminal charges should be brought.

"The inquest will be adjourned for a date in the future once those criminal proceedings have taken place."

Police are yet to release the name of the man charged.

A spokesman for Derbyshire police told Derbyshire Live: "A 39-year-old man from Middleton-by-Wirksworth, has been charged with one count of causing death by dangerous driving in relation to a collision on the A515 at its junction with Clifton Road on 10 September, 2019.

"He is due to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court 20 October."

After his death, Mr Bates' family paid tribute to the man they said was "young at heart" and "loved life".

They said he was a "lovely man who was loved by everyone who knew him and whose death has left a big hole in the lives of his loved ones".

His daughter said: “Dad had a passion for cycling and motorbikes and kept canaries as a hobby.

"He was full of life and always on the go. We will miss him a great deal.”
