Santa Fe - Taos Area
 

I'm looking to plan a trip to New Mexico this summer and was wondering if
anyone had advice on definite rides to do or alternately where not to go. I
am looking to do some climbing. I know it's not the high peaks like Colorado
(did that this past summer), but the area intrigues me. I think I have
identified the obvious routes, but was wondering if anyone had any less
known road climbs that I could ride. Seems the mountain biking is better
there, but I want to stick to the road this time.

I can tell you that Taos is really beautiful and that there is PROBABLY some
good riding for you there, but I have to admit that I've only been there in
an automobile and only for about an hour!

The Enchanted Circle ride is the iconic Taos route:

There is a bit of climbing, maybe not as long as you would find in the
Colorado Rockies but a bit steeper. It's a nice route, but there are
limited services along the way.

Out of Santa Fe, there are some good rides going to Los Alamos and also to
Las Vegas. Check out the Pedal the Peaks route in New Mexico for some
ideas:

The above link is to the New Mexico brevet series. Last June, the
600K was in the Taos area. There was 24,000 feet of climbing in 600
Km (~370 miles). That's a lot of climbing. You can find some nice
50-100 mile sections within that route.

Thanks Bob.. I had looked at these as potentials, but wasn't sure about the
rides.

When you say the back way to Cimarron, you mean out 64 I assume. Looks like
there may be a road up to Green Mountain Summit. Is that paved?

I also assume when you say ride to Angel Fire for a climb, you mean up the
ski area?

Yes, Eagles Nest to Cimarron via 64. Through Cimarron Canyon State Park.

From Mora, up to Angel Fire, via 434. Twisty little canyon up past
Guadalupita. I've driven that route a lot, but never on a bike. Should be
an awesome ride!
