Lance Armstrong's mother promotes federal funding of bike/ped accommodations

USAToday has a story about Lance Armstrong's mother's advocacy of
funding for bicycle accommodations in the upcoming federal
transportation bills:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/cycli...g-mother_x.htm

BTW, AmericaBikes is urging cyclists to call their congressperson in
support of Enhancements funding (whether you like it or not, the main
source of funding for bicycle accommodation of EVERY sort in the U.S.
today). The vote is scheduled for Thurs, Sept 4th. Details at

A few excerpts from the article:

------
Linda Armstrong Kelly is hitting the TV news interview circuit to
promote federal funding of bike trails and safe routes to school.

"The transportation bill now up for a vote in Congress doesn't include
funding for these very important projects," she says. "It is shame
that they can't ride safely to school." . . .

Armstrong Kelly says she and young Lance used to take long bike rides
on weekends, exploring the back roads of Texas in what they called
"adventures in uncharted territory."

A working single mom, she couldn't drive her only child to school, so
Lance also would ride his bike to class and swim practice.

"Parents always worry about their kids being away from them, but
riding a bike taught Lance about responsibility and accountability,"
she says. "Those values helped make him the champion he is today."

Citing statistics from the Texas Bicycle Coalition, she says that in
the 1960s more than 60% of American kids walked or rode their bikes to
school. Today that figure is down to only 13%.

When I was a child in grade school, I lived no more
than 1/2 mile (probably less) from the school, and
really, really wanted to walk or bicycle. I wasn't
allowed to, because there is only sidewalk for the
last 100 feet or so.

I really, really hated taking the bus. The other
bus riders were terrible, mean people; and I either
had to get up early to get on the bus really early,
or wait until the bus is full and comes out of a
side street near my house, then get on and have a
hell of a time finding a seat.

I was not allowed to walk/bike. Bummer!

Did you see the corpulent and shapeless little bag of **** that
propagated the MSBlast worm, costing a couple million dollars?

More chins than the San Francisco phone book, and it's hard to see how
he gets through the average door.

Years spent in front of a damn computer, and all he has to show for it
is a body weight three times what it should be, and all society has to
show for it is an epidemic of computer disasters.

Somebody should make this varmint into something useful -- like soap.
