Port Fairy Rail Trail (Vic)

Checked out the Port Fairy rail trail yesterday, in the majority, very
good. Well surfaced, terrain moderate, though fairly exposed. Reasonably
accurate map is available from tourist information centre in Port Fairy.
Lack of signposting between Koroit and Illowa something of an issue, at
Illowa itself some navigation required as the rail right of way has been
usurped by the highway.
Old Princes Hwy section was a hoot coming down. Did not check out Kellys
Swamp section, which is reportedly unfinished. Distance longer than
expected, official distance is under 60 km return, with scenic diversions
we covered over 90 km.
In general, trail can be recommended for general use. Mid-summer would
require extra water, in spring numerous magpies were observed. Bridges
were well constructed, with cross rather than lateral timbers. Koroit
bakery makes an excellent coffee and a salad sandwich with attitude, and
is cheaper than Port Fairy, a bit megatrendoid these days.
