Road Bars (26mm) in a Mountain (25.4mm) Stem = Problem?

Is this small diameter difference likely to cause a problem in real life? I am trying to put a high angle (130 degree) stem on my road bike to improve the fit and the high angle stems seem to only available for Mountain bars. Possibly maybe yes. With 'faceplate' stems you can often do that safely but brands/models vary a lot. Maybe link a photo or try a competent LBS who might give you an opinion after seeing what stem it is you have. -- Andrew Muzi www.yellowjersey.org Open every day since 1 April, 1971 |
Be aware that not all "road" bars measure 26mm at the clamp. If you've
already found a 25.4 stem that you like for fit purposes, you would be well advised to also look for a set of cyclocross-specific drop bars, many of which measure 25.4mm. Another good option would be to look for 31.8mm bars and stem, which is the newer oversize standard that is now being used for both road and mountain bikes. This would allow you to pair a mountain stem with a drop bar without compromising the clamping between the two. Whatever you get, make sure it matches. |
