Heres two:

LeMond Poprad - sweet 853 frame at bargain price - can vouch for it as
I own one. Components are Sora, but 'cross components are consumables
anyway.

Another that caught my eye - Surly Crosscheck - frame about $395 -
I've seen full Ultegra bike in Excel catalog for $1195 or so - you
could put one together cheaper with 105, Sora, or used stuff.

If your looking for a cheap cross bike, I would definitely checkout
the Surly Cross Check :: http://www.surlybikes.com :: You can get it
as a frameset for under $400 as was previously mentioned or as a
complete bike. The beauty of the Cross Check is you can run gears or
singlespeed.

Another cheap alternative would be the On-One Il Pompino ::
http://www.on-one.co.uk/products/ilpompino.shtml :: this bike is an
incredible bike and very versatile.

Either way you can't go wrong with one of these. Surly is a QBP
company so warranty parts and the like are sent out quickly, while
On-One is very in touch with their customers and go out of the way to
make it a pleasant experience.
