Carry tandem on hitch mounted bike rack
 

Does anyone know if it is ok to carry a tandem on a hitch mounted bike
rack? Perhaps having both wheels taken off?

I looked into it at some point... with both wheels taken off it would
just fit. But instead I ended up getting a Topper (?) rack on sale for
$150 or smth... totally happy with it. Granted, I already had the bars
installed and two other roof racks for singles. the car looks really
cool with 2 singles and 1 tandem.

I saw a guy with a GMC Yukon (large SUV), that had a hitch mount rack with
a large rack on it.
At first I didn't know what it was, but later I saw that he had put a tandem
onto the rack and it made sense then.
basically the rack sits in the center and runs at about a 60 degree angle
up.
When he puts the bike on in one piece, he slides it on up the rack, does
something to hold the rear wheel on.
Then off he goes. it looks pretty neat albeit pretty spectacular.
it could have been one of the Draftmaster Bicycle Rack Systems, I am not
sure. I don't remember if he had to take the front wheel off or not.

the front wheel to mount and carry a tandem.
So anyway there might be another tandem rack out there like this Draftmaster
model that lets you tie on the bike as one piece, but I haven't seen it yet
on the internet.
It could also be a special custom rack from Draftmaster too.

My tandem has travelled many miles across the back of the car on a
hitch-mount rack. No problems.

Driving on a parkway with this thing stickng out from the back could be
prohibited. I once mounted a ski rack this way and got busted.

Well my tandem is about 8 feet long with the wheels on, which is a lot
wider then my car. At the very least you'll need to remove the wheels.
However, I would really be worried about stability because most
carriers have the support arms close enough to fit through the triangle
of a single bike. With a tandem on there you could get a lot of
unwanted movement. I have a Yakima roof-mount tandem carrier and I've
driven cross-country with it. Aside from the dead bugs on the frame, it
worked well.
