Why dig 'em out? Leave 'em in place, fit the housing and cables and
your good to go.

BTW, I don't recall seeing anything looking like casing ends in any of
my Ergos, FWIW.

I have them installed in three bikes with no problems at all to date.
All three were installed years ago, one is an Al cyclocross frame.

Have at it after checking the clearance issues w/ the crank...
