Default Road Bars (26mm) in a Mountain (25.4mm) Stem = Problem?

Possibly maybe yes. With 'faceplate' stems you can often do
that safely but brands/models vary a lot. Maybe link a photo
or try a competent LBS who might give you an opinion after
seeing what stem it is you have.
