Reminds me of when Lotus developed, designed and built a pursuit bike for Chris Boardman, which he used to overtake a top level competitor in what must have been the least elapsed time and space ever, one of the most thrilling moments from the Olympics (in fact the only one I have remembered for so long).

You may want to consider
a) that McLaren largely belongs to the investment fund of the ruler of an Arab State, and
b) that Zac Brown, the chief executive of McLaren, is a longtime wheeler-dealer and that he was promoted to the top job from the chair of the commercial director, basically the guy who finds and strokes sponsors, i.e. he is not a jumped-up mechanic, and
c) that Formula One is a rat****ery second only to advertising, and then only by a rat's whisker, and
d) that Mr Brown, by all accounts a charming man, is the second biggest rat in F1 (the paradigm of all rat****ers being forcibly retired after a sex-scandal), and
e) that who owns Merida has suddenly become a factor in its survival
