Yes you have to degrease your chain first since wax and oil don't go together. I use Dutch 'wasbenzine'.

This seems to be «Â*essence FÂ*» in French and “white gasâ€� in English. I
was using this a year ago, but I have now switched to another similar
mineral solvent (« pétrole désaromatiséÂ*») which is a bit cheaper and
less volatile, though it will still entirely evaporate, of course.
