The Melting Pot worked. The Salad Bowl doesn't.


I think the point that Tom was trying to make was that almost all of the other
generations of immigrants wnated almost desperately to intigrate into America
while adding to it's tapestry. Now it seems to me that here and in Europe, they
want to come into the country, take advantage of what it offers, but never
integrate.
I think that the "diversity" movement is encouraging them to NOT become
integrated.
I grew up loving the ethnic neighborhoods and people here, and really miss
them because they have disappeared because Europeans here are lumped together
as white types. You know how much crap that is if you've ever hung out with all
of the diverse European immigrant groups that came here. I spent a lot of time
hanging out with Cuban exiles and Peurto Ricans here growing up and while they
were hugely proud of their heritage they also wanted to learn the language and
be part of this country too. I'm not that closely in touch with new immigrants
but I just don't see the drive to integrate that used to be there.
