I like to think that I helped in getting my street made a 20mph zone.
Several neighbouring roads were already 20mph, and the council
published plans to extend the area but oddly left my street as a 30mph
rat run. I wrote to them to complain about the anomaly and the reply
was something like "err, yes, you're right, sorry". A few months
later the signs went up. Shows that it is worth asking.
