Default Cincinnati Installs Lane Markings To Increase Safety For Cyclists

Drivers in Cincinnati can expect to see some new lane markings on streets soon.

The city became the first in the region to install “sharrows” (shared lane
arrows), which are markings used to remind motorists to share the road with
bicyclists.

Officials expect sharrows to help cyclists position themselves within the lane
to avoid being hit by a suddenly opened car door.

The Department of Transportation and Engineering started placing the lane arrows
on portions of Clifton Avenue Monday. Parts of Ludlow Avenue and Madison Road
are expected to receive sharrows next month.

Locations were chosen based on results of a month-long city wide survey of
cyclists in the area.

The markings will include a bicycle symbol with double arrows at the top and
they will be placed every few hundred feet on the pavement.
