Hiker falls over cliff to her death
Partner hurt trying to rescue her at site near Rodeo Beach
Cecilia M. Vega, Chronicle Staff Writer

(04-14) 21:23 PDT Rodeo Beach -- A 20-year-old hiker walking along a
rugged coastal trail above Rodeo Beach in the Marin Headlands died
Monday after falling over the cliff, and her hiking partner was
injured when he attempted to rescue her, authorities said.

The woman, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the
scene. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued her 22-year-old partner via
helicopter, and authorities said he was in stable condition.

Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Lauren Kolumbic said the man, whose name also was
not released, called 911 on his cell phone from the hillside around 3
p.m.

The Coast Guard dispatched a 47-foot motorboat, and officers located
the pair on the hillside and called in a helicopter to help in the
rescue.

The U.S. National Park Service is investigating the incident. A
spokeswoman for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area said the
woman was hiking ahead of her partner when he heard her scream and saw
rocks falling. The man hiked down the hillside to help her. It was
unclear how he was injured.

The steep hills above Rodeo Beach are a popular destination for Bay
Area hikers.

It was unclear how far the woman fell or whether she had been hiking
on a designated path.

"Wherever they were, it was a very steep area," Kolumbic said.
