Default disc brakes on front, v-brakes on rear

Has anyone tried this? Does it work for you?

I don't want to add lugs for rear disc brakes to my frame, so I would only
consider using discs on the front.

I imagine it should be fine, as most of the braking power comes from the
front anyway. The rear brake does not need as much modulation or power as
the front.

Any comments?

I've just done it. I installed it on my old frame and it worked great when
I rode it around my block. I say old frame because a day after I installed
them I picked up a new frame at the local end of year bike show. I should
have a real test ride this weekend so I can't say how they really work. I
made sure the new frame had V-brake mounts on it so that I could keep my
rear tire setup.

Your reasoning is right though so just got for it. I'm sure you realize you
need a new front wheel and hub, and maybe fork. Make sure you have a decent
front brake lever if you are keeping it and going mechanical. I went the
Avid Mechanical route, with Avid speed dial 5 lever. If I were on mtbr I'd
tell you how great they are but I've had no real rides with them yet.
