I have an older bike (SOMEC) that has two Mavic Reflex Clincher 700C
rims. *They are 32 hole SUP /UB/ CONTROL and also have the following
code on them * 622 13 * 6005 *TIB. *Both are bronzish in color. *What do
these codes mean??

One of these rims (rear) recently failed and I'd like to explore *
several options:

1. *Find someone who has a pair of these rims that they want to sell.
2. *Get another pair of Mavic Open Sport rims in a similar color.
3. *Get recommendations on the best set of 700C rims for the least $$.

Also, *I have a Campy Record 8S hub on this wheel and I've been told I
could just zip-tie the spoke pairs together and transfer to the new
rim...is that true or do I have to get new spokes with the right
length?? *I'm not knowledgeable about these sorts of things.

622 is the ISO rim/tire size 700C
13mm is the inside section of the rim
6005 is the material
Mavic's color code for silver finish was TBP, grey TIB

I'd suggest an asymmetric rear rim such as Velocity's
Aerohead for riders up to 200lb. Get the correct 292mm
spokes with your new rim.

If you want to do a straight spoke swap, get the ERD (Effective Rim
Diameter) *for the Reflex from the list off of Damon Rinard's spoke
calc (Google it) and then see if there is another rim out there that
has the same ERD. I think the Reflex has the same ERD as the Open Pro
(605?), so that is always an option, albeit an expensive one. The
Velocity rims have smaller ERDs, and if you go that route, you will
need new spokes. -- Jay Beattie.- Hide quoted text -

While that will "work," Some rims will have opposite chirality, which
is to say that when the valve is at the bottom of the wheel, a
Velocity will have a non-drive-side spoke in front of the valve, while
the Mavic (IIRC) will have a drive-side spoke in front of the valve.
If such a transfer is done, you'll have a perfectly functional wheel,
but you'll have crossing spokes above the valve, instead of parallel
spokes, as is standard.

(I think that Velocity's that way because they're Australian - their
drains swirl the wrong way and all.)
