It has to do with the geomagnetic field.

geomagnetic??? wow, for a guy that fancies himself as an engineering
expert, you're remarkably ignorant of the coriolis effect.

There are really interesting
musical effects too. I had an LP cut in Australia, of the Ern Malley
Suite, and when I unpacked and played it in Cambridge (that's in East
Anglia, not at that place in Massachusetts with the quite good little
missionary school), the music came out backwards. Since Ern Malley was
a practical joke by poets anyway, the jazz suite was at a third or
fourth remove from any tenuous original reality (see my review of the
paintings in Nation Review c1974) and I couldn't tell the difference
between the music as played forwards Down Under or backwards on the
Fens. (Sometimes one wishes Salvador Dali were still alive and rubbing
sardine oil into his hair.)

All of this is a roundabout way of saying we should really do our
Christian best to excuse Australian cyclists when they seem more than
slightly weird. It's the geomagnetics that got them.
