The Public see cyclists riding dangerously, see close shaves and get
held up for hours when cyclists get squashed, what else would be their
perception ?

Cyclists are their own worst enemy.

Gardening accidents are obviously going to be more common than cycle
accidents, there are vastly more gardeners than cyclists, and gardeners
use sharp tools a lot.

The UK used to have a lot of cyclists, but the public wanted something
better, so cars proliferated.
