"The city bought the land from Norfolk-Southern for $11.8 million last
September. It's estimated it will take $14.1 million for design and
construction of the 4.1 mile stretch of trail."
26 million dollars for a 4.1 mile trail??
So, $6,341,463 a mile.
The Transcontinental Railroad was financed on the basis of
$16,000/mile (about $426,000 in today's dollars) on the flat and
$48,000 (about $1,278,000 today) in the mountains.
