Rescuers airlifted a mountain biker from a remote trail near Roxborough State Park on Saturday after the rider sailed off his bike and landed on his face during an endurance race, officials say.
The 41-year-old racer crashed about 1½ miles south of Carpenter Peak on the Power Line Trail around noon, said Deborah Sherman, spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. The victim's name has not been released.
"The guy took a face-plant," Sherman said. "Nobody saw it."
The racer was going down a rough section of the trail very rapidly when he struck a log and flew over his handlebars, she said.
His injuries are not considered life-threatening. Other racers found the victim and reported the accident to a checkpoint, she said.
It took another hour and 20 minutes before search and rescue workers could reach the man, Sherman said. The helicopter sent to retrieve him had some difficulty finding a place to land.
"The guy is conscious," she said.
The man, who was hurt in the neck, was taken to Swedish Medical Center in Englewood.
The racer was participating in the Indian Creek mountain bike race, which is part of the Rocky Mountain Endurance Series.
