I replaced the battery but that didn't help. The GPS unit just doesn't
read the HR band.

Along with the ideas others presented, it's also possible, if it's seen a
*lot* of use, that the conductive surfaces (the electrodes that read the
electrical impulses through your skin) may have simply worn out.
