Default Police officer assaulted by cyclist

It seems that aggression among cyclists is not restricted to the UK. They
are as bad in Canada.

A Chilliwack cyclist could face assault charges after allegedly punching a
female RCMP member who stopped him for not wearing a helmet.

Mounties say that the officer stopped the 34-year-old man March 6 at about 7
a.m. as he rode his bike without a helmet on Bernard Ave.

According to police, the man became agitated as he was questioned by the
officer. He then repeatedly punched the officer in the head before fleeing
the scene.

The officer gave chase, at which point police say the man forced the Mountie
to the ground and again started punching her. Several Good Samaritans in the
area who witnessed the incident intervened to stop the attack.

With their help, the officer regained control of the man until backup
arrived.

"None of us want to speculate what the outcome may have been had it not been
for these people," said RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck. "This is a really
sobering reminder to us all that there is no such thing as routine in our
job. Every situation we engage in is potentially dangerous and even we can
lose sight of that sometimes."

The RCMP officer sustained head and face injuries and was taken to hospital.
She was later released and is expected to recover, according to an RCMP
press release.

Mounties say the suspect could be charged with up to three counts of
assaulting a police officer.
