Money is part of it, with a tandem typically costing more than two
singles of the same quality. Most tandem riding couples that I know
of also have their own 'half bikes' too. The tandem is just a way
for both of them to ride together regardless of their separate
abilities. At a cost.

Tandems have similar speed profiles to recumbents. Slower up, but
faster down and on the flats. There's a crossover at some point, but
around here the tandems *always* lead the pacelines. Staying in
their draft is always worth slowing down a little on the climbs.
