That sounds right.

To make life easier, you may want to just use the locknuts to chase the
threads, unless they're really really flat. New locknuts are cheap... dies
aren't.

Since it's '01 XT, I'm assuming your hub was quick-release. Was your
quick-release not tightened enough? How much do you weigh? What kind of
riding were you doing?
