REI and Sports Basement sell from mid-range to high-end. They have one
big advantage over the typical LBS that around here, that people find
extremely attractive (Performance Bike had the same advantage when they
were in business).

The advantage is store hours. A lot of bicycle shops keep banker's hours
during the week, and the weekend is when people want to be out riding,
not shopping. Being able to shop until 9 p.m. on weekdays is a very big
deal when you need a part or accessory or even a whole bike.
