I'm scarily tempted, even being a long way from Dundee and never having tried
a remotely comparable machine. Just out of curiosity, and nothing to do with
my approaching birthday at all, roughly how much do you think a fair price for
a second hand Speedmachine like this would be?

I was trying to come up with a sensible number myself, but I'm very bad
at valuing things like this. A data point would be a vanilla new one
(no lights, no tailbag, no rack, mechanical discs) would set you back
£1775. That would be slightly lighter in the frame department as HPVel
have changed the rear triangle from CroMo to aluminium (the rest of the
frame on all SpMs is aluminium), but aside from that around the same.

A figure I plucked out of the air was ~ £1,600.

Plan B it is then. (I have a MIG welder and an angle grinder and some
cheap old bike frames. But no spare time to introduce them to each other,
nor a clear idea of what I want. Yet.)

(I was pleasantly surprised when I mentioned having seen a recumbent on
ebay for £800 (Challenge Mistral mentioned on urc earlier) to my wife
and she said "how much do you spend on petrol at the moment?" not "you can't
possibly spend that much on a bike".)
