Default avid disk brakes and 2000 rockshox sid - compatibility problems

i just bought a 6" avid mechanical disk brake setup for my mountain
bike, which has a 2000 rockshox sid with a disk brake mount. for some
reason, the brake caliper doesn't cover the entire rotor when the unit
is fully assembled - the rotor only goes about halfway into the brake.
i've called a couple of bike shops and suppliers, and they all seem to
think i shouldn't be having a problem - a friend's got the same brake
mounted on his bombers, and the housing looks the same. . . i've
thought about getting the 8" brakes, but am worried that that much
stopping power might put too much of a strain on the bike/fork, which
is an xc and came with v-brakes. any suggestions/ideas/advice? thanks.
