Default Dynamo Theft in San Francisco

For those who claim that theft of dynamo lights is not a problem, look
at this bicycle, parked by the San Francisco Ferry Building. The dynamo
lights are no longer there, plus the thief took the dynamo wheel as well
as breaking the fork. Apparently they had to steal the handlebars in
order to get the Supernova E3 Triple. http://oi43.tinypic.com/14v75mb.jpg

Looks like they stripped pretty much everything except the
seat and rear brake, so its not like the light was the only
target.

And they stole the Chinese flashlights too! But that just means more click-through sales commission for you, right, Steven?

How are you so sure that is what happened.

Sarcasm doesn't come across well on Usenet.

I live in a low-ish bike crime area but my standard modus operandi is to
lock the frame to something solid lock the rear wheel to something solid
and lock the from wheel to something solid. Three locks may be overkill
but it beats walking home.

It's locking incompetence. Look at the one behind that hasn't been
stripped. There is a fat U-lock which could go through the rear wheel the
frame and around the post. But no. It's just through the frame. Why not
just erect as sign that says steal my wheels?

Notice the rust on the bottom bracket, spindle taper, chain, and on
parts of the frame. That bicycle has been there for a while. My
guess(tm) is that someone initially stole the easily removable wheels
(not secured by the lock). Later various others came along and
removed the rest of the parts. Also, I don't see any evidence that
the bicycle had ever had a light, much less a hub dynamo where I would
expect to see some evidence of the necessary wiring and switching. The
bicycle also has a quill type stem and a junk seat post, items which I
would not expect on a bicycle that also has an expensive dynamo.

The thief also stole the wire and sold it to a metal recycler.

Looks like they also stole the clamp bolt out of the quill stem. And broke off the bottom of the clamp. And broke one leg of the fork instead of stealing the whole fork. Odd thief. I'm going with the others who say the parts were stole over time and the bike never ever had a dynamo hub or lights..

I find it very bizarre you would even think this bike had a $250-300 Supernova E3 Triple headlight and most likely the $200 Schmidt hub to power it. Why would you think a $9 junk bike would have a $600 light system on it? Wow.
