Default Campagnolo Croce d'aune rear der won't shift to small cog

Anyone with experience with this odd der? This is one with the
machined push-rod.
I tested this with the cable disconnected and checked the stop, of
course. I use it with with a 7 speed Shimano cassette and hub. Not
high mileage.
There appears to be excessive slop within the u shaped cradle/.bracket
the main body pivots within on the hanger bolt , It hangs on a cast
aluminum dropout, so even in the unlikely case it is bent, there is no
way I would bend it back.

Can or should the slop be reduced? Or is the old spring just shot?

You can try to put a thin spacer onto the bolt that attaches it to the
frame to try to move it farther outboard. OR respace the rear wheel to
move the cogset inboard if you can or just put the der in a case for
display and get a rear derailleur that works better. These were pretty
but didn't work well even when new.
