Default Wheel and tyre sizing, french, imperial, 'german' methods

Hey,

Recently encoutered a few of the more irregular/uncommon wheel sizes that
accompany older bikes. I've read Sheldons overview and comparision table but
i'm interested to understand the logic (which they seemingly lack) and
origins behind these more obsolete sizing systems. Does anybody have any
data on this?

Thanks.
