Shape-Shifting Glass for Better Vision

Maintain Traction4MATIC® All-Wheel Drive features a number of quick-thinking innovations to power every wheel, in every condition.
Eyeglasses come in an endless array of designer frames, yet the technology of optical lenses has remained largely unchanged over the years. Regardless of the design — be it vintage charm or modern cool — a lens of solid glass with correction levels at specific focal points has been the norm. Bifocal wearers know the frustration of looking through the windshield of their car through one part of the lens, then having to shift their view to a different part of the lens so they can focus on the instrument panel in the dashboard.

Maintain Traction4MATIC® All-Wheel Drive features a number of quick-thinking innovations to power every wheel, in every condition.
Now, though, University of Utah engineers have created a liquid lens that can automatically adjust focus in 14 milliseconds using infrared light to measure distances as actuators change the curve of the lenses. So in the near future, the lenses of your glasses may become as perfectly attuned to your every glance as your fashion house–designed frames are to your wardrobe.
Once that breakthrough technology is available to automotive engineers, Mercedes-Benz will likely be one of the first to incorporate it. Meanwhile, the new S-Class already has its own glass breakthrough — a new generation of dual 12.3-inch high-resolution displays with a single bonded-glass panel, plus optional onboard cameras that scan the road surface ahead to let the predictive suspension system know about bumps as small as three millimeters. This self-adjusting apparatus creates an ultrasmooth ride as the car glides effortlessly over almost all terrain.
There’s a world of technological wonder embedded in the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, along with the meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship Mercedes-Benz is known for, all with one goal in mind: to deliver a ride like no other. It’s the future of luxury — right now.
