Seatpost diamter/size for a Roberts Roughtstuff

I'm away from my bike at the moment but I wish to order a new seatpost online. Can any one of you advise me on the seatpost size for a Roberts Roughstuff frame built back in 2002? I have also emailed their ex-mechanic (Roberts has closed for business )).

If possible measure the old one. It's a mine field of 0.2mm increments.

yes, well, if I could measure at this moment I wouldn't be asking. But I think there is a fair amount of leeway with the steel downtube and the clamp.. I'm thinking 27.2 would be ok. Have a chance of a nice old campag post.

You might pull out your seat post and read the size stamped
on it just below the limit mark. Or measure it.

I think I would measure it first... I just last week bought a new seat
post for a bike that I was sure had a 26.8mm post.... got it home and
it didn't fit :-( Luckily the vendor was willing to exchange it for a
27.2 the next day :-)

I was recently involved in a 27.2mm seat post that should have been 27.0
and it required a lathe to make it fit[1]. So no, there isn't *any*
leeway. In short, I can't help you, but I wouldn't advide guessing, or
if you must, go under, a 0.2mm shim is likely fine. At least it won't
get jammed in the frame.

[1] Before you ask, the old one was measured, and stamped, at 27.0 by
me. But it isn't that hard to misread and old style vernier guage as
oppose to a digital one...
