Default Frankie Fired

From VeloNews:

"Early Wednesday, we received the following e-mailed statement from Frankie
Andreu, the director sportif of the Toyota-United Pro Cycling Team.

"On July 25th, 2006, the day after I returned home from the Tour de
France, I was informed that my contract was being terminated by the
Toyota-United Pro Cycling Team. I was very surprised and disappointed to be
told to leave especially after all the hard work of putting together this
first year team. I know the team will continue their winning ways because
it's a great group of riders. I wish them success."
Attempts to reach a team spokesman have proven to be unsuccessful and we
will follow-up with a complete story as soon as further details become
available. "

This should be interesting.

It remains to be seen why, but if it is door #3 Monty, that would be a sad
situation given that he and his wife resisted a subpoena, lost a motion to
quash and were compelled to testify under oath.

More likely, the powers that be were just tired of the mostly negative
publicity. Regardless of how people with intimate knowledge of the
pro-cycling world feel, I believe the majority of ordinary people in
the USA consider Lance a hero and don't believe any of the drug
allegations.

If that's the case, then the team owner (a former chump of a pro
cyclist) has a very distorted view of just how much Andreau publicity
rubs-off on his Toyota team. People generally do not equate Andreau
with his present life. They equate him with his pro cycling career (as
a rider).

As far as mainstream publicity, that all died within a few days of the
court leak. Within the cycling world, only a few of us RBR shlubs
still talk about it. It's effectively a dead issue.

Here's hoping; I'm so tired of hearing his pinched, nasal references to the
"turd-a-france."

You're exactly right about folks not equating Andreau with the
Toyato-United team. Not once during all the hoopla about the
testimony, etc... did I give one moment's thought to the team. In
fact, until he was just fired, I'd forgotten he was even involved with
the team in the first place.

Frankly, I think that there must have been something brewing under the
surface for him to have been fired for something that seems so
relatively inconsequential as him missing that race.

You did some selective editing. The whole article can be found at:
http://www.velonews.com/news/fea/10586.0.html

More information from the article that I think is important::

"Contacted by VeloNews.com, Andreu said that team owner Sean Tucker told him
that the dismissal was based on his failure to attend the three-day Nevada
stage race, which runs from June 24-26.
"I had written Sean an e-mail telling him 'look, I just spent a
week-and-a-half up in Philly, I'm going to be home for one day, then
supposed to go to Tour de Nez - which will be a total of five days - and
then, after being home for two days, I go to France for a month,'" Andreu
said. "I just said I need to spend time with my family. It would have been
really tough on our kids had I not stayed home that week." "

It sounds more like that the owner of the team felt that Frankie was not
fully committed to being DS for the team. I can imagine a discussion when
Frankie told the team management that he had been contacted to work the Tour
de France for OLN and telling the team that it would not conflict with the
team. When the Tour de Nez came around Frankie was burnt out and instead of
cancelling the OLN gig he skipped the race. He returns from France to find
out that the team feels that he didn't live up to his commitments and is
fired.
