If it helps you, I'm a cyclist, and admit some cyclists do stupid things, I've probably done some myself (cycling too close to a parked car and ending up in hospital comes to mind). As you point out, it's not any one class of road user, of class of person who do stupid things, it's pretty much human nature ...

As to the argument about driving/cycling on the pavements, when will
cyclists admit that some cyclists ride for all or a large part of
their journey on the pavement.

Yep, I'm sure that happens, I did an ~100m stretch with my children this evening. As did at least 4 or maybe 5 other families at the same time. Totally non joined up thinking on somebodies part, 2 shared use footways separated by ~100m of non shared use. Going in one direction you can use the cycle lane (we do now, when youngest was 4-6 we didn't), going in the other it's 3 crossing and 2 road junctions (in 100m). No pedestrians this evening, but enough room if there is. Not sure I count this as stupid though (sorry)..

As an example, while walking to work today, a cyclist rode up a side
rode on the left, turned left on the pavement, rode along the pavement
to the next turning (also on the left) & turned left a cycled down
that road (on the road).
He should have joined the main road for the 100 yds or so, but could
not be bothered.

Who knows why he did it, you'd have to ask him. The only times I do it is with my children, and then I keep it to an absolute minimum. As they get mature we're able to forego resorting the pavement more and more, and from the start I've told them that the pavement is for pedestrians and the road is for bikes. Clearly I have to square the circle with them when we do use the pavement, but I think they get it.

And before anybody trots out the excuse that he was scared, the
traffic was moving at about 20mph, and there was as many cyclists as
cars on the road (including many Boris Bikes)
