Hour record attempt imminent
Dutchman Maas van Beek (50) will try and better Coppi's old hour record of
45.871 km this Saturday on the track of Alkmaar, Netherlands. Apart from the rider's age, there are a few more special circumstances surrounding this event. Most importantly, Van Beek will not use a saddle! (or seat post, for that matter). That's right, he's planning on doing the whole thing standing. Furthermore, to make that easier(?), he's using a 68x11 gear with 205mm cranks. Apparently he's reaching 43 km/h averages in training. It's for a good cause. He's taking sponsors for a minimum of 1 euro per kilometre. The money goes to an organization that helps AIDS orphans in Africa. Van Beek himself is a cancer survivor (melanomous cancer '85-'87). Here's the site: http://www.goedkoopsteskelter.nl/recordpoging.htm (in Dutch but plenty of photos). There's a form at the bottom of the page for pledging as a sponsor. -- E. Dronkert |

Ed, you don't REALLY believe that he is going to set a record do you?
There's no way he can maintain an aero enough position for an hour. 43 kph is REALLY impressive but the difference between that and 45 are monstrous. |

Hour record attempt imminent
Ewoud Dronkert wrote: wrote: Why no saddle? I guess he thinks otherwise it's not much of a challenge. -- E. Dronkert I once broke my saddle on a mountain bike ride. It was very tiring riding the relativly short way unable to sit down. Not only that, but a lot of stability is lost without the anchoring effect of a saddle between the legs. Early mountain bike star Cindy Whitehead once won a 50 mile off road race after breaking her seatpost just after the start: http://www.sonic.net/~ckelly/Seekay/ftf_covers.htm |

Certainly if he forgets to take seven amphetamine pills, as Coppi did in 1942. Benjo |
