Which Degreaser?
What's the poor mans choice of degreaser for cleaning the chain? I'm
thinking something cheap-as-chips that'll sit proudly next to the B&Q chainsaw oil. Mark. |

I rarely degrease my MTB chain - I simply bung more chain saw oil on. When I thoroughly clean my transmission I use gunk or paraffin (because I have run out of jizer). I have recently discovered muckoff - it's excellent for most stuff, but after several months of repeated applications of chainsaw oil it doesn't make much of an impression on the chain. The muckoff is used sparingly, I spray the bike with water then paint the muckoff on and work it in with the brush. I expect a 4 litre bottle will last several years. I bought it for £15 from Nelson's cycles - this compares with £25 or so from Halfords. Back to the chain; paraffin is probably the cheapest bet, then a generous application of chainsaw oil. With decent MTB chains costing less than £8 I swap them reasonably often, I usually bung the old one away before it's done 800 off road miles. I use an XT chainset and cassette, even with my cheap and cheerful cleaning they seem to last a very long time. I'm pleased to see that there's another believer in chainsaw oil (although I bought my 5 litre of it in CeeGees rather than B&Q - it cost £3.45 in 1998 and I expect to leave almost 2 litre of it to my neice). John I have been quite pleased with chainsaw oil this winter. Got mine from B&Q as I couldn't be arsed to find a cheaper supplier. £2.54 for a litre is not too expensive, I have no children or nieces or nephews to hand these things down to so it would be a waste anyway !!!! Screwfix were cheaper but delivery bumped the price up !! |

John I did try to find an oil supplier locally but I could only find suppliers of heating oil or wholesale oil suppliers. Took me a while to find a hand oil can, £3.49 in Halfords, flexible spout which is useful for chain oiling. |

Use a coffee filter paper to remove the solids, or even just let it stand and then decant/siphon. |
