This thread is absolutely symptomatic of what makes RBT such an unpleasant place to be. It starts as a celebration of the fact that the majority of people are good, and within a handful of messages has degenerated into the resident scum calling someone a pederast merely because he celebrates his faith. And then those who should know better blithely continue discussing the subject of child molestation; do you guys actually intend to build on the insult to Mark, because that's what it will look like to an outsider reading this thread on the archive. And now the excuse will be a limply complaisant, "Well, that's the way the internet is."

You're disgusting, Gene Daniels.

Or people could stop replying to it so the thread would die.

My impression is that much or even most of society's indignation is
around the church hierarchy covering up/protecting the offenders - as
opposed to the fact that there are offenders.

With no similar outrage for teachers' unions who defend that more
frequent class of offender.

Or boy scouts.

But none of these people claim to embody the voice of god. You can see
why people are angry at the catholic church.

Pederasts go where the kids are. Plaintiffs go where the money is. And the center of the Venn diagram is the Scouts and the Catholic Church.

Around here, the teachers' unions know better than to circle the wagons around abusers, plus, most of their wagons are circled around the incompetents -- and any spare wagons are spreading doomsday messages to promote passage of the latest tax levy or bond measure.

Yep. The only ones suggesting teachers' unions are involved
appear to be Murdoch sources.

I am backing Clearly's position.

Misundertanding is symptomatic of ignorance.

There is no misunderstanding here, Daniels. You are scum. That's a fact. You are lying about Deacon Cleary's position. After you, without the slightest grounds, libelled him as a pederast, this is what he says to you, and about you, unequivocally, zero possibility of misunderstanding:

Cleary To Daniels:

A gentleman would not have traduced anyone's good reputation. A decent person who made such a stupid mistake would have apologized. You, Daniels, try to justify yourself, and you tell further lies in an effort to obfuscate the issue. You're slime. That too is a demonstrable fact.

Well, that's certainly part of it locally (there has been an ongoing set
of lawsuits and legal processes about how the local archbishop Nienstadt
mishandled sex offenders in the clergy. Amazingly he hasn't been
criminally charged himself for being an accessory after the fact and
hasn't been removed from his position by Rome). But it's the betrayal
of faith that I think really irks people, as someone else mentions
downthread.
