Default More cycle race carnage

A CYCLIST is in a critical condition in hospital after a serious road
traffic collision during a cycle race on Exmoor yesterday (April 22).

It is believed the cyclist was travelling down the hill and the car up when
they were in collision. The cyclist came to rest under the car and was
trapped for some time.

Another totally unneeded crash, costing thousands.

How many cyclists will it take before road racing is banned?

"Officers urgently need to speak to the driver of the silver car as
they may have important information as a witness." ?!

Cheerless,

That link describes it as a cycing event, not a "cycling event" not a
race. Why did you describe it as a race?

If you do a little research, you'll find out that the Exmoor Beauty
ride is a social ride, definitely not a race.

I see you are as reliable as ever

The article headline did originally say race, it has now been altered to say
collision.

However, if you google the incident you will see that it is described
multiple times as a race, such as this :
"A cyclist is in a critical condition in hospital after colliding with a car
while competing in a race on Exmoor yesterday."

OK, I can read through the error in the use of "they" (in these loony days,
the paper probably didn't want to use the correct English word "he" for a
case where sex is unknown) but surely the driver (whether male or female) has
already reported the accident in which he was involved?

Okay, then, but solely for the record:

"The Exmoor Beauty is not a race so remember to always ride at the pace
you are comfortable with and enjoy the experience." - as stated in the
FAQ:

http://exmoorbeauty.org/faqs.php

If the official programme for the Monaco Grand Prix contained a disclaimer to
the effect that the event was not a race, would you accept that as well?

Indeed - it is high time that racing was banned on the public highway.

So why do they time the people entering for it then?

It was clearly a race - and should not be allowed.

I suppose the plus point is that the more people who are injured or killed in
them, the more likely hood there is of them all being banned.

Then I wonder why they need race marshalls (from the above article)and the
riders are described as competitors?(
http://www.thisissomerset.co.uk/Cycl...ail/story.html )

I also wonder why the Police describe it as a race, and why is it called a
'Challenge' ?

You would have thought that as it took "some time" to remove the remains of the
cyclist from under his car - he should have realised that things were not quite
as they should have been.
