So a cyclist just causes petrol to be used that they would have used had
they gone by car. Except not as much.

Probably a lot more. I measured my fuel consumption when I had a VW Golf with a real time readout of miles per gallon. It was surprising how much difference you could make by changing speed.

Alternatively, with more cars are on the roads you have to wait longer
at junctions. Sitting stationary isn't free.

It uses **** all actually.

And if people wouldn't go so ****ing slow, you wouldn't have to wait so long.

Around here they just run over the cyclists. If the F350 doesn't get
them the horse trailer will..

I'm becoming a pussy in my old age and really like dedicated bike
paths.
Sharing narrow, shoulderless roads with traffic isn't my thing anymore.

Sharing them when there's a cycle path right next to the bloody road is
insanity, yet they all do it around here.

I've seen that. They are usually dressed in gaily colored Lycra to boot.

They're all homosexuals.

Says the poofter that shaves its legs.

I wear the same clothes as I would when out walking.

Which is no clothes at all.

Personally the further I get from the road on a bicycle the better I
like it. Fortunately there are quite a few paths around here for
recreational riding.

Yes, I use a bicycle for being in the countryside. I use a car for being
on the road.

I bought mine in '72 and Volkswagen was still figuring out how to build

German ingenuity it had less room than my Sprite.

When we divorced I kept the Lincoln and my wife took the Audi. She
traded it for a Rabbit (Golf) and got almost nothing for it. She liked
the Rabbit. I rode in it a couple of times and it seemed like a nice ride.

In its defense Nixon imposed a 55 mph national speed limit in '74 and
the cops were really enforcing it for a couple of years. The car was not
designed to do 55 except as a blip on the way to 90.

I'd never buy a BMW as they're all rear wheel drive, which is absolute
****e for cornering.

The BMW motorcycle riders tend to be more of the same. The club came
through town and there were several arrests and one fatality iirc. When
the Hells Angels came here on vacation there were many arrests -- all of
local kids protesting the cops treatment of them. The police chief got
fired over that fiasco. Turns out you can't import out of state cops to
swell your ranks in this state.

Why did the pigs arrest them?

The BMW riders? Mostly for being drunken assholes.

The kids? The cops, especially the imported cops from St. George UT,
were being assholes. It was a hot summer night and the kids had an
impromptu demo protesting the cops' attitude. The local cops could have
defused the situation but the Utah idiots went full Mormon roughing the
kids up and arresting them. They even managed to beat up a reporter for
the local independent paper.

The Mormons would take the kids to the jail and kick them out with no
paperwork so it was a complete cluster**** at the jail.

The Angels had rented a ski area outside of town so they quietly motored
off and went to bed or at least stayed out of the fracas.

I was having an espresso at the Raven and sitting out at a sidewalk
table. A couple of Angels got a coffee and sat down beside me. I
detected a distinct odor of Shower To Shower. Angels just ain't what
they used to be.

The consumption in my Toyota goes all to hell at 85. It still gets
around 29-30 mpg but it definitely isn't economy mode.

The Golf was very decent in that regard. Mine is a 73 and it was fine
for 45 years. Very little had to be replaced, just the alternator regulator.
I didn't bother to replace the bonnet release cable, just had the wire
coming out of the front radiator grill with a bend in the end of it that
I put in the keyring to release the bonnet. The odo also failed, and
I didn't bother to replace that either.

And so they spend much time and money making special cycle ways, or worse
shared spaces where everyone has to avoid each other resulting in the less
able not going anywhere near them, reducing footfall in town centres and
putting more people in cars instead.

I do sometimes wonder if the planners actually think things right through to
the end. For example even when a cycle way is totally segregated, it pinches
road space from both vehicles and pedestrians, but come the start and end of
said cycle way, the cyclist has to go back on the road, cross running
traffic or mingle with pedestrians, so with fewer lanes of traffic, the
flow is slower and with the mixing of cyclists at the end you often need
lights to stop accidents.
It may look good but come mid winter all the good weather cyclists are back
in their cars moaning about the lack of road space.
I have pointed this out to the councils and others but am met with the
blank its current policy to discourage car use.
Next you will find that shops on top of fighting online competition will
want cars back to increase their customers again during the winter.
Whatever you do, unless you can move all the building back, you cannot
have it all ways.

Interesting to note that several companies are now back to talking about
cars that run on hydrogen again for long distance use, using fuel cells.
