What percentage of people who actually buy those bikes are sophisticated
enough to use Yahoo groups?

Using Yahoo takes sophistication???

Thats one group I'm glad I don't belong to. lol

I wonder what the life expectancy of that group is. What percentage of
members are speared through the heart by a busted top tube?

Are you kidding? Those things are built like tanks. Unless they have a
rear susp, the frames are practically unbreakable. Now a head injury
from a thrown derailleur might be another matter GGG.

Oh, they break. They may have a lot of metal but it's cheap material and
they don't appear to actually be engineered.

Back in the day, I broke one. My first MTB.

Course, I had to run into a parked car at approx 15mph to do it.

I didn't like mine much, and eventually moved up to a more purpose
oriented unit. I really never nailed down the exact problems. Maybe it
was just a rode problem. I was working with the basic 5:1 scope. Maybe
it was the chain, maybe it was the entire ground tackle, but what ever
it was, that bike wouldn't hold a 30,000 lb'er with 5ft of draft under
the lightest weather .... even with 3/8 all chain/snubber setup.

Ask Mr. Baker if you think I'm wrong.

The basic premise of the page seems to be "I've made a poor purchase,
been told I've made a poor purchase by pepole who know, but want to
talk about my poor purchase with other people who've made the same
mistake."
You get told it's a crappy bike because you just cannot get a durable,
offroad capable bike for $99.99.
These bikes are meant for the odd jaunt down to KFC, and should be
treated as such.

cheers
